In the beginning of one’s grappling career, it seems undeniably better to be a “soldier,” or else you’re liable to build in all the wrong habits. Consequently, Roger Gracie, Travis Stevens, and tons of other wanderers and scientists (like wrestling Olympian Ben Askren, who I wrote my first book about) all began as mostly soldiers somewhere.
