It is so important that you and your family are prepared in the event of a flood. While this is something that all families hope they never have to endure, flooding is an all too real disaster that can strike at any time. Being thoroughly prepared is the best way to get through a flood safely. Thankfully, there are certain things that you can keep in your home to ensure that you and your family are properly cared for in the event of a flood. Here are some of the most important things to have on hand.

Medical Supplies And Medications

One thing that you likely won’t have access to in the event of a flood is a drug store. If you are trapped in your home, then it is very important that you have access to all of the medications and medical supplies that you need. If you are someone who takes regular medications, it is a good idea to have somewhat of an extra supply on hand for events like this. Also, if you don’t normally have any extra medications, but hear of the chance of a flood, calling your doctor for extra medication should be one of the first things that you do.

In terms of medical supplies, having a first aid kit on hand is very important. You want to make sure that you have enough medical supplies to take care of each member of your family, just in case, so a medical kit that is equipped to handle a family is best. Your first aid kit should include bandaids, ointment, creams, gloves, tweezers, scissors, alcohol pads, emergency blankets, and more. Also, be sure to replace your medical kit when it expires, because this could leave some of the items inside of it useless to you.

A Good Food And Water Supply

If there is a flood warning, most people begin to panic. This can cause them to head to the store and wipe out all of the food. A great way to be prepared for a flood so that this food shortage doesn’t effect you and your family is to have a good supply of food storage. By having your own supply of food storage beforehand, you can feel confident in your ability to feed your family if you are stuck in your home for several days, due to the flood. Things like canned goods and other non-perishable items are great to have on hand because you can store them for a few years at a time.

Also, you may want to consider filling up old milk jugs, pop bottles, or some other clean containers with water, just in case you lose access to your water during the flood. Filling up your bathtubs and sinks with water is also a good way to ensure that you can flush the toilet even if the water is turned off.

An Evacuation Plan

It is so important that you have an evacuation plan in place for any kind of disaster that could potentially occur. This evacuation plan can allow you to safely exit your home in the case of a flood and will make things go much more smoothly. Also, if your evacuation plan includes exactly where you and your family will go in the case of an emergency evacuation, then you won’t stress about where to stay once you do get out of your home.

In the event of a flood, it is so important that you are as prepared as possible. You can do this by having the appropriate medications and medical supplies on hand, keeping an ample amount of food and water stored in your home, and creating an evacuation plan for how to evacuate your home if needs be and where to go once you do.
