In this episode of Survival Self Protection Podcast, Dr. Geoff Aitken explains the difference between sport and a street fight and how street fights are very different than what students are often taught in self-defense classes: street fights are “random and chaotic.” Geoff explains that, although not as popular in the United States, the Filipino styles of martial arts are the most well-suited for street fights. He trains people for actual street fights by having his students enter what he calls a “gauntlet”, where students have to make it from one end of the gym to the other without running while being put into practical situations like being attacked or being left alone to replicate the randomness of everyday life. Geoff suggests that intimidation and fear are key to securing survival in a street fight, and he details how to find self-defense teachers that will train students in practical self-defense as opposed to a martial art.
